The French Olympic Sailing Week
Aaron McIntosh reports

New Zealand was represented well in 97 with Aaron McIntosh , Jon Paul Tobin and Bruce Kendall in the Mistral Windsurfing Class.

The Kiwi Windsurfers are back and back with vengeance competing for the first time internationally since the Olympic games. In a predominately light air contest the kiwi’s battled well , Aaron finishing in fourth place , Jon Paul 12th and Bruce 13th.

The Men’s Windsurfing Class had 5 races to qualify for the gold and silver fleets and then had to sail another 7 races for the finals. Competitors were tortured with bad race management , spending up to six hours on the water in less than pleasant conditions with temperatures dropping to 8 degrees at times.

Aaron sailed a good a regatta winning one race in the finals and having 4 top 10 races.

Jon Paul Tobin showed the Europeans that he will be a force to be reckoned with soon by winning the final race. Bruce Kendall has been unable to sail since the Sail Auckland regatta in February but due to his wealth of experience surprised the field with his consistent results. The most noticeable thing in the regatta was how inconsistent most of the sailors in the 80 strong fleet were, this shows that the European fleets are extremely competitive.
