The Multisail concept is
based on the ability to change the size of the sail by attaching or removing an extra
panel (or two) on the base of the sail. The advantages
include less sails to transport, less cost
and faster re-rigging when changing up or down. The panel zips along the base of the sail with a robust plastic zip and two load straps are used to attach the panel at the foot (the strap goes through the "old" down haul eyelet) and the clew (the strap goes through the "old" outhaul eyelet). While tensioning the rig with the extension attached, the sailor partially unzips the zip to test the amount of load on the zip, which should be negligible, since the load is carried through the straps. This is why the system is robust and there has never been a zip failure in use, there is essentially no load on it! To change sail sizes just release the down-haul and out-haul, add or remove the panel if changing up or down, adjust the head strap or the mast base extension to adapt to the new luff length, adjust boom height if necessary, re-attach and apply the downhaul and outhaul, go sailing! The owner and designer of Multisails has a detailed explanations of the design principles on the Multisails web site |
